ADA: Overview, Legal Aspects and Field Workshop

This unique Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Workshop will discuss the legal aspects of ADA requirements, the basics of ADA and provide a walking tour that will include participants navigating various intersections in a wheelchair and being blindfolded and utilizing a cane within Downtown, Kansas City, MO.

A tentative schedule includes:

  •  9:00 am - 10:00 am – Legal Aspects of ADA (Gelene Savage, KDOT)
  • 10:00 am - 10:15 am – Break
  • 10:15 am - 11:15 am – ADA requirements for sidewalks and prep for the outdoor tour (Ron Effland, MoDOT)
  • 11:15 am - 12:30 pm – Lunch Break (on your own)
  • 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm – Outdoor tours (45 min each with a wheelchair and with blindfold/cane) (Ron Effland, MoDOT)
  •  2:00 pm - 2:30 pm – Debrief on the outdoor experience (Ron Effland, MoDOT)


Instructors include:  Gelene Savage, Managing Attorney for KDOT’s Office of Chief Counsel and Ron Effland, P.E., ACTAR, Non-motorized Transportation Engineer for MoDOT Design Division.   

The course is limited to the first 24 participants who register for the event. 

Registration deadline is Monday, June 2, 2014 at 5:00 pm.
