LED, induction and other lighting technologies are increasing in popularity across the metro. Local agencies are specifying newer lighting technologies in capital projects and testing existing pole standards with retrofitted lights.

During this session, Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Kansas City chapter President, Tate Betz of Henderson Engineers, will discuss lighting technology and the direction the standards by which they are measured are trending.   Phil Herrman, of Burns and McDonnell, will demonstrate the use of streetlight design software to verify that an LED fixture meets standards at a typical specified spacing.   Michael Park and Mark Sherfy, cities of Lee’s Summit and Shawnee will provide agency perspectives on the challenge of upgrading existing streetlights.

Participants will hear:

  • Information from IES as it pertains to new lighting technologies and standards.
  • A brief overview of illumination standards, definitions, and how design consultants design to meet commonly specified illuminance and uniformity ratios.
  • Survey results from Missouri and Kansas agencies on the current state of roadway lighting, practices and any near-term plans for migrating to new technologies.
  • Agency experience regarding maintenance and energy costs.
  • Roundtable discussion.
