a pilot workshop about Walk Friendly Communities for the Kansas City region.

A Walk Friendly Community is a city or town that shows a commitment to improving walkability and pedestrian safety through comprehensive programs, plans and policies.

A team of WFC professionals from University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center will lead discussions to highlight the successes and benefits of applying for and becoming a Walk Friendly Community.

Workshop discussions include:

  • The benefits of becoming a Walk Friendly Community.
  • Pedestrian safety and walkability in the Kansas City region.
  • Introduction to the WFC application.
  • Five-module strategy:
    • Measurement and evaluation of pedestrian activity, safety and projects.
    • Planning and policy strategies such as complete streets, pedestrian safety action plans and more.
    • Creation of campaigns for education and encouragement for walkability and safety.
    • Review best practices for engineering and design that improve walkability and pedestrian safety.
    • Look at the role of law enforcement in supporting walkable, safe communities.
  • Interactive action planning and next steps.
