KCITE Training - ADA Basics in the Right-of-Way, Legal Background and the Outdoor Experience

This unique Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Workshop will discuss the legal aspects of ADA requirements, the basics of ADA and provide a walking tour that will include participants navigating various intersections in a wheelchair and being blindfolded and utilizing a cane within Downtown, Kansas City, MO.

A tentative schedule includes:

  •  9:00 am - 11:30 am – Legal Aspects of ADA (Terri Parker, MoDOT's Chief Counsels Office)
  • 11:30 am - 12:15 pm – Lunch Break (Boxed Lunch available for purchase, or bring your own)
  • 12:15 pm - 2:30 pm – Outdoor tours with a wheelchair and with blindfold/cane (Ron Effland, MoDOT)
  •  2:30 pm - 3:00 pm – Debrief on the outdoor experience (Ron Effland, MoDOT)

Ron Effland from MoDOT and Terri Parker from MoDOT's Chief Counsels Office will be presenting on ADA requirements within the right-of-way.  Terri will cover the history and requirements of the ADA before lunch, while Ron will lead the afternoon session which allows participants to partially experience the vision and mobility challenges many of our residents face when trying to navigate our streets.  Ron will be bringing wheelchairs, blindfolds, and white canes to simulate these challenges and enlighten designers and inspectors as to why some of the intricacies of the design requirements exist.

Please Note:  The outdoor tour will be a rain or shine event.  If you would like to purchase a box lunch, please select a ticket with a lunch option.  You are also welcome to bring your own.
